Editorial Comment: Thank you Delta Beverages

THE Cancer Association of Zimbabwe’s ongoing screening programme in prisons is a huge step in the right direction.

It comes at a time when the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services has been courting various partners for the rehabilitation and empowerment of inmates.

Bankrolled by Delta Beverages, the initiative has brought hope and relief to inmates in various correctional facilities around Zimbabwe.

Earlier this week, the campaign provided a huge sigh of relief to a Mutare inmate who was suspected to have developed breast cancer.

An ultrasound scan showed he had gynecomastia, an enlargement found in men or boys.

The man had feared the worst.

He was part of the group of 401 inmates who got help from the campaign, courtesy of CAZ and Delta.

This initiative is set to be taken to five more prisons in Manicaland where inmates are set to benefit.

What has made this appeal laudable is that many inmates in our correctional facilities don’t have access to cancer screening.

However, this is changing and has been made possible by Delta Beverages.

Under the initiative, correctional officers and their families have also benefited, according to Delta Beverages’ general manager corporate affairs, Patricia Murambinda.

It was also refreshing that all the tests conducted came normal, which can go a long way in fighting cancer.

However, only one inmate from Chipinge prison had precancerous cells and was treated with Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP), during the ongoing exercise.

CAZ’s marriage with Delta is yielding results and it should be taken countrywide and save more lives.

Resources permitting Delta, in conjunction with other partners, can assist CAZ achieve many of its objectives.

Other corporations should take a leaf from Delta Beverages by supporting various disciplines such as sports, arts promotion, education and health.

The leading local beverage manufacturer has also been supporting various charities around the country.

It is also the biggest sponsor of football in this country through its sponsorship of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.

The company’s latest initiative, in partnership with CAZ, will help the poor and less privileged members of our society. Investing in people’s health is the best thing we can do for the long-term success of the nation. Good health is one thing that we should never gamble with since it is a matter of life and death.

Delta knows this and that is why the company is playing such a leading role to help inmates in our correctional centres. Our correctional facilities need a lot of attention and this kind of sponsorship as they house thousands of people.

Some kids are born in prison and they also need help because, in most cases, their mothers are not able to help them. We need more companies to come on board, including those which will specifically target to help these kids. They did not choose to be born in prison and they are also Zimbabweans.

Thank you Delta Beverages for leading the way.
