THE Dynamos house is burning and while it has experienced such chaos before, we feel that it has never been as pronounced and as deep as is the case right now.
Finally, the fans of the club – who are and have always been its biggest asset — have finally had enough.
Some of them are boycotting the Harare Derby, the biggest football showdown in the capital, because they feel they have to make a big statement that they are not happy with the way their club is being run.
The boycott is being organised by various fan chapters in the capital.
Some say they will converge in the Harare CBD on Sunday morning before marching to Rufaro and then going to an entertainment joint where they will have drinks and fun.
That itself is a big statement of the poor state of affairs at DeMbare.When Highlanders fans decided to take a similar route and protest against the PSL, they converged at their club house instead of Barbourfields.
Their home ground was virtually empty on the day while the fans protested at their club house.
In sharp contrast, fans of the homeless Dynamos do not have a home where they can converge to protest against Bernard Marriot.
That is why they will meet at an entertainment joint.
It’s a reflection of how Marriot, and some of the leaders who came before him, have mismanaged DeMbare that today, 63 years after this club was founded, the Glamour Boys do not have a place they can call their home.
Motor Action, who came later and then collapsed, secured a home at the Motor Action Sports Club while Dynamos are still homeless.
The Glamour Boys don’t even have a training ground and these days they train at a ground which is owned by a church.
Last year they were training at Alex Sports Club.
They don’t even have a bicycle or anything —both movable or immovable— which they can call their asset.
Despite all this, Marriot wants to make us believe that in the 11 years that he has been in charge the Glamour Boys have taken a giant leap forward.
Now, the results on the pitch are showing the depth of the rot at Dynamos and the fans have had enough. We understand their fury because DeMbare is not the kind of team which should spend 11 years without winning a title, which should score just one goal in 11 matches and, to get into double figures, require an own goal from an opposition player to do that.
The fans know that Marriot is the problem and that is why they are voting with their money and staying away from this captured Dynamos.
They need their DeMbare back and they are right.
It’s sad that we have all allowed one man and his family to destroy what is really a national sporting franchise.
We are all to blame for allowing Marriot to destroy the people’s team.
