Ellis Robins shine in victory

ARNOLD Makandawire was the star of the show as Ellis Robins beat rivals Marlborough 23-17 in a derby in a schools rugby tie on Saturday.

The Ellis Robins teacher responsible for rugby, Mathius Mandishare, says Makandawire was outstanding and was the catalyst of their victory.

Mandishare was impressed with his team’s performance after they didn’t make the impact they had hoped for at the Dairibord Schools Rugby Festival.

“We had to make a few changes in the forwards,” said Mandishare.

“They were not scoring tries at Dairibord and so we had to do something for us to win.”

Ellis Robins drew 3-3 with Milton and were comprehensively beaten 0-45 by Lomagundi College and 0-29 by Allan Wilson.

Ellis Robins have five players who were selected for the Presidents Development Team that will take part in the Zimbabwe Under-18 squad for the Craven Week festival in South Africa.

Last year Chemist Manduku was selected for the Under-18 team and is now on scholarship at Churchill School.

Ellis Robins were also named the most disciplined team at the festival.

This year, twins Simbarashe and Tanaka Synclair, Easten Uranda, Crispen Kaura and Courage Dzvova were selected for the developmental team which will face the provincial select team in the final national trials.

Ellis Robins’ next fixture is on Friday against St John’s College II at St John’s College this weekend.
