Do you still remember songs “Jiliana” and “Mairosi” that hogged the limelight in 2007? The singer of the two songs, Taruvinga Manjokota, has conceded that sungura music is no longer rosy and he might quit for another profession.
He has since relocated to Mkwasine in Chiredzi where well wishers have donated to him a musical kit and a Toyoace truck to use for shows.
Over the weekend the musician who was performing at Chigarapasi Beer Hall in Chiredzi said his music career has been challenging for years now despite gaining fame with his album “Chamungwarire”.
The musician bagged a NAMA award in 2008 with his outstanding album “Chamungwarire”.
Maverick businessman Philip Chiyangwa even donated a residential stand to the musician.
For Manjokota, fame has never translated into fortune though he is not alone in that paradox as many artistes suffer the same fate.
In an interview shortly before his show, Manjokota said he has relocated to Mkwasine because he is popular that side.
“Dhewa made his name from Kwekwe and I have tried also to work from this side but nhamo yandaona mumagitare yakwana” he said.
The “Mairosi” hitmaker said he wanted to venture into another profession.
“I want to pursue another profession and also venture into farming as separate investments because music is no longer that paying as it used to be,” he said.
“Songs are there (composed) for an album but for now I am concentrating on some issues,” he said.
“Sometimes I come to Harare for other business but here is my new base and I am happy,” he said.
