THE Environmental Management Agency carried out a clean-up campaign at Murambinda Growth Point as a way of celebrating the Africa Environment Day on Tuesday.
Speaking at the Africa Environment Day commemorations held at Murambinda Primary School in Buhera, Mbada Diamonds chief executive officer, Mr Thomas Luciano, urged people to work towards a sustainable environment so as to reduce environmental risks and ecological scarcities.
“Environmental issues have risen to be a focal point on most international fora. The general concern has been the continued depletion and plundering of environmental goods without paying attention to the environment’s sustainability and resilience. This should be addressed because when the environment is constantly affected it retaliates in return. Look at the continuous deforestation that has been going on. It has affected the ozone layer, but in return, more and more people are now being affected by skin cancers.
“Current trends in population and industrial expansion show that waste is being generated at a faster rate than what the earth can absorb. Major centres are characterised by illegal dumps of solid waste and shortage of waste bins. Some sewage treatments are no longer able to handle the domestic effluent and the situation is not appealing at all. Keeping a clean environment is everyone’s duty and so everyone should be involved,” he said.
Speaking at the same ceremony, EMA Manicaland provincial manager, Mr Kingston Chitotombe, stressed the need for the adoption of an integrated waste management system at household level so that every family takes part in protecting the environment and keeping it clean.
“Every household has a role to play in ensuring waste reduction for the sake of environmental protection and sustainability. Families should focus on reducing the amount of waste they generate in day to day activities. Re-using all the waste that can be used is also a noble idea and people should embrace the recycling of bio degradable waste by making composts in their homes,” said Mr Chitotombe.
