TAKING to action the biblical script a?cleanliness is next to Godlinessa Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has teamed up with several churches to raise environmental awareness and waste management.
EMA is targeting huge congregations across Bulawayo to spread their message and put environmental awareness into action.
Bulawayo provincial environment manager Decent Ndlovu said that churches could bring change to the environment.
a?We have engaged several churches or I can say we have worked with most churches in Bulawayo to raise environmental awareness and how to manage waste in their respective homes and churches. Churches are very influential platforms; they have the potential to spread the word on creating a mind of cleanliness,a? said Ndlovu.
Ndlovu added that some churches were now inviting EMA to their gatherings to speak on environmental issues.
a?The good part is that some of the churches are now inviting us to their meetings. Giving us a platform where we can talk about environment issues. As you know, churches are good platforms to disseminate information because congregants spread the word to other people as well. If they have clean up campaigns we provide them with cleaning material,a? he said.
He said that their next mission was to engage the United Presbyterian Church to deal with illegal waste dumping in Makokoba.
a?Makokoba was named asA one of the dirtiest suburbs, so we are going to be working closely with the Presbyterian and Makokoba residents to come up with an initiative to deal with undesignated waste dumpsites that are spread all over the suburb,a? he said.
