Mr July said people occupied the land after noticing Sunway City (Private) Limited was sitting on a large tract of land that was lying idle.
“People had encroached onto the land because there is no land where people can be allocated at the moment. People have resorted to occupying all open areas, including river banks.
“That is very risky and at the end people end up demanding services when they are not paying any rates to council,” Mr July said.
Mr July said people must come forward so that they can be placed on the waiting list and benefit if alternative land is found.
“We encourage people to approach the local authority at all times so that they can be put on the waiting list and be allocated stands when we get land. Whenever people build their structures they should seek council authority.
“We told people to organise themselves so that we resolve the issue of accommodation. It is true that people encroached onto privately owned land, but we can assist where we can,” Mr July said.
Deputy Minister Zvidzai condemned the demolition of the houses and said the timing of the events was wrong.

“The people are not criminals and they should have been given enough time so that they are resettled somewhere else. It is heart-rending, especially when it is done by a company related to Government.
“We do not see why they had to demolish the houses because the company is not carrying out any developments on the land,” he said.
Sunway City general manager Mr Kwaku Dzvukamanja said he could not comment.
“I cannot comment since I was not present during the tour. I do not know what was said,” he said.
