STORIES of love overcoming all the odds have captivated audiences for centuries, inspiring art, literature and even revolutions.
Yet, when that passionate compass points towards a forbidden destination — a close relative — the narrative takes a sharp turn. Disgust replaces admiration and social norms clash with the idea of love conquering all.
This stark contrast between societal expectations and the power of romantic attraction lies at the heart of the incest taboo.
That was the reaction of many people when news filtered through that an 18-year-old boy from Mawabeni area, under Chief Gwebu, in Esigodini, Matabeleland South province, decided to engage in an incestuous relationship with his 16-year-old sister that culminated in a pregnancy.
Yes, you read it right, his biological sister!
He described the sexual relationship as “mind-blowing”.
The girl is said to be five months pregnant.
Circumstances of the incident are that sometime in August 2023, the boy (name withheld) proposed love to his younger sister and she agreed.
The two were staying together with their parents when they established a highly unusual bond that led to sexual encounters several times.
It was proved in court that sometime in January this year the boy again asked his younger sister to be intimate with him and she agreed.
The two then went into one of the bedrooms and had sexual intercourse twice.
The illicit affair, however, came to light in March this year, when it was discovered that the boy’s younger sister was pregnant. Questioned by her mother, she disclosed that it was her elder brother who was responsible for the pregnancy.
Shocked by the revelations, the mother reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest of the siblings.
They both recently appeared before an Esigodini magistrate to answer to charges of having sexual intercourse within a prohibited degree of relationship. Incest is illegal in Zimbabwe, as defined in Section 75 (2) (c) of the Criminal (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
They both pleaded guilty to the charge.
The boy was sentenced to 12 months in prison, of which four months were suspended for five years on condition he does not, within that period, commit any offence involving sexual intercourse within a prohibited degree of relationship, for which, upon conviction, he would be sentenced to imprisonment without the option of a fine.
The remaining eight months were suspended on condition he completes 280 hours of community service at Mawabeni Clinic.
His younger sister was handed a six-month sentence, fully suspended for five years, with similar conditions regarding offences involving sexual intercourse within a prohibited degree of relationship. — B-Metro

Groom discovers ‘bride’ is a man after wedding vows
An Indonesian groom discovered that his “bride” is actually a man 12 days after their wedding.
The man, only identified as AK (26), met his “spouse” Adinda Kanza (26) on Instagram in 2023, and the two dated in person for a year.
During their in-person meetings, Adinda wore a traditional Muslim niqab that covered “her” entire face, which AK reportedly assumed was a sign of “her” devotion to Islam. The couple decided to get married in a small ceremony at AK’s home after Adinda told him that “she” no longer had any family.
But AK grew suspicious of his new “wife” soon after tying the knot on April 12, since “she” avoided intimacy by telling him “she” was on “her” period or feeling unwell, according to media reports.
AK said Adinda refused to speak to his family and continued wearing “her” niqab at home, so he tracked down “her” former address 12 days after their wedding and was surprised to find “her” parents alive and well there.
Adinda’s parents revealed that AK’s “wife” was actually a man, who started cross-dressing in 2020. They also said they did not know that their son was in a relationship, let alone married.
The police said Adinda behaved like a woman and had a female-sounding voice, adding: “If you look at their wedding photos, Adinda looks exactly like a real woman. He also has a gentle voice and tone, so there was no suspicion at all about him being a woman.”
Adinda was arrested by the police and he told them he intended to marry AK to steal his family’s assets. He is facing fraud charges that could land him behind bars for up to four years.
Police suggested the man enjoyed pretending to be a woman while dating men. It was also revealed that the alleged fraudster had previously dated women.
Investigations are ongoing. — Wires
