Ethiopian border jumper sentenced 2 months in prison

Failure to speak English, Portuguese or Shona at Forbes Border Post led an Ethiopian man to be found on the wrong side of the border with no travelling documents.
Abune Hanat (25), an Ethiopian, was caught by immigration officers at Forbes Border Post attempting to cross to Mozambique and he failed to produce valid travelling documents.

Hanat appeared in a Mutare Magistrates’ Court facing charges of unlawfully entering Zimbabwe and he pleaded guilty to all the charges before magistrate Mrs Sekai Chiundura

“I admit to the charges but I have been working in South Africa at a delivery company and my papers expired and was told that in Zimbabwe I could get a citizenship,” said Hanat through a translator.

Mrs Chiundura said that the only place he could acquire citizenship was his country.
“The only country that can grant you citizenship is Ethiopia and for this I am sentencing you to two months in prison.”

The State took time to find an Amharic translator, the language spoken by Hanat.
