OLD Georgians will host the second edition of Striders-Exide Zimbabwe half-marathon on Sunday with more than 500 athletes expected to take part.

Registration for the marathon is now open.

Athletes will be expected to take part in the 5km, 10km, 21km and 42km races.

Battery manufacturers, Chloride Zimbabwe, through their Exide Battery brand, are the main sponsors.

They have brought on board Harare Athletics Club, to help with logistics, to hold a successful event.

The event was first held in February 2019, at Mt Pleasant Sports Club, which saw several top athletes, including veteran Elias Sawari, and Lucy Maruwa, taking part.

The race was won by another veteran athlete, Jonathan Chinyoka.

The 46-year-old, Sawari who took part in the Comrades Marathon twice, as well as in the Two Oceans Marathon, is once again expected to grace the occasion.

Athletes, who will take part in the 42km race, are expected to collect their race packs today.

Those who want to compete in the 21km race, are expected to collect their packs tomorrow while those set for the 5km and 10km races, runners will collect on Saturday.

Chloride Zimbabwe marathon, organising secretary, Olen Maturure, said all was set for the race and registration was still in progress.

“We are happy to be promoting healthy living, through sport, and this is only the beginning of big things to come and we are willing to continue learning, since it is still a new thing.

‘’We managed to have a successful event in 2019, but failed to do so last year, because of Covid-19.

“We are having a 5km, 10 km and 21km race for both men and women.

‘’We are grateful to our partners and we believe this is going to be an annual event on the athletics calendar.

“It is part of our social corporate responsibility programme,’’ said Matarure.
