DJ Smylie, one of Harare’s top dancehall DJs and chanters, has praised fans in Bulawayo for responding well to Zim dancehall music — a genre which has taken the country by storm. The Legendary Sounds DJ, who had a joint show with the Red Fox dancehall group at Club Forty-40 at the weekend, revealed that fans in Bulawayo were supportive of dancehall groups.

“Fans in Bulawayo are responding to dancehall very well. Every time I introduce a new tune, I see them listening and dancing along.
“I’m sure the next time we come back and play the new tunes we played today, they will have mastered them,” he said.

Legendary Sounds started their performance with a set of international dancehall tunes which included Jamaica’s Capleton, Mavado, Vybz Kartel, Khago and Tarrus Riley, among others.

However, the goal posts changed for Red Fox Sounds which performed way later after Legendary Sounds. They unfortunately played to an empty venue as fans had trickled out by the time they got on stage.

Club Forty-40 entertainment manager, DJ Mzoe expressed disappointment over Red Fox Sounds’ performance.

Fans also expressed mixed views about Red Fox Sounds’ performance blaming it on promoters saying they were not promoting dancehall in Bulawayo.

“We enjoyed Smylie’s performance. We are appealing to DJs here to host more dancehall shows so that we get used to the genre as we are mainly exposed to kwaito and house music,” said one fan.
