“MAKE us happy in proportion to the days you have afflicted us, in proportion to the years we have experienced trouble.” — Psalm 90:15
There is a connection between our experiences of suffering and the joy that follows.Affliction is an inherent part of the human experience. It comes in various forms — loss, disappointment, hardship and trials. Understanding that we are not alone in our struggles should give us hope to move on and never give up.In times of affliction, we often question our faith and the purpose of our pain. I have realised that suffering can lead us closer to God.
It is in our darkest moments that we often seek His light. This pursuit can deepen our spiritual lives, strengthen our character and enhance our resilience. The psalmist’s request for joy in proportion to affliction reveals a beautiful divine principle. When we endure trials, we develop a greater appreciation for the moments of happiness that come afterwards.
Take time to reflect on your journey. Each of us has faced challenges that have shaped our lives. Think of the trials you have endured. How have they led you to moments of joy?
The Bible calls for balance — acknowledging that, as we have experienced trouble, it is only fitting that we also experience happiness.
So, how do we find happiness amidst our afflictions? Through cultivating a heart of gratitude. This can transform our perspective. Reflecting on the positives, even when times are tough, helps shift our focus from pain to possibility.
Remember, “Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning”. Let us be people of faith: trusting in God’s plan during our trials. He promises restoration and joy, and believing in His goodness can sustain us through hardship. As we conclude today’s reflection, remember that affliction and joy are intertwined in the tapestry of life. Embrace your trials, for they are the soil from which joy and strength grow.
Let us pray for the wisdom to understand our suffering and the grace to receive the happiness that follows.
May we continue to seek joy and share it with others, knowing that every trial we face is an opportunity for growth and a deeper relationship with God. Amen!
