Mazowe town, once an old mine and coach stop but now already a recreational and education centre and poised to become a satellite town of Harare, last weekend held a prestigious event on Miss Gold Mazowe. Fourteen-year-old Fiona Mhaka of Shingirirayi High School was crowned Miss Gold Mazowe.
She outclassed the other 15 contestants to land the coveted title.
The newly queen covered her face with her hands in shock soon after she was announced the winner.
Not only that, she was speechless and only shed tears of joy.
“All I want in life is to become a celebrity like American pop artiste Brandy,” she said.
In an interview with Cool Lifestyle soon after the crowning ceremony, the tall an slim teen model said she was happy to win such a prestigious title.
“I am humbly honoured to be the queen of Mazowe.
“Competition was stiff among the girls as everyone was beautiful,” she said.
Fiona said it was her dream come true and will go a long way in developing her dream.
“My dream of becoming a world-class model has been realised.
“I thank my parents for their overwhelming support in my endeavours of pursuing modelling,” she said.
Fiona said modelling should not be taken as a trivial profession considering that some men and women are making a living out of it.
“Tyra Banks started at a tender age and look where she is now. I think modelling should be taken seriously as you will never know where it might take you.
“Modelling is a career like any other profession, for example models like Brita Maselethulini made a name for herself and she made a living out of it,” she confidently explained.
Commenting on how she ventured into modelling she said: “I started doing it two years ago after being inspired by United States model- cum-musician Brandy while at Mabelreign Girls High School,” and from then she never looked back. She encouraged her peers to chase their dreams and use any given opportunity wisely.
“If you want to achieve your full potential in modelling, one should be able to eradicate the fear factor and have confidence,” she said.
Fiona grew up at Jumbo Mine and worked hard in fighting the perceptions surrounding mining environments.
Apart from walking on ramp, the shy teenager loves basketball and public speaking.
The event was organised by Metallon Gold Zimbabwe in a bid to uplift talents amongst the teenagers.
The pageant is in its second year.
