Inspector Tedius Chibanda confirmed the incident and said investigations into the cause of the fire were in progress.
“We received a report of a building consisting of a bottle store and a butchery which was gutted by fire around 6am,” he said.
Witnesses said they noticed a cloud of smoke coming from the building and quickly notified the Fire Brigade which arrived and put out the inferno.
A security guard, who refused to be identified, said he was sleeping in the butchery at the time the fire broke out and was awaken by the noise from people who were outside.
“I was sleeping inside the butchery when the fire broke out and I escaped through the back door after being awoken by noise from people who were outside,” he said.
Bottle store owner, Mr Stondorn said he suspected the fire was caused by an electrical fault since the building had been experiencing power problems due to ageing electricity cables.
