Five men have each been sentenced to perform 105 hours of community service after they attempted to smuggle bales of second-hand and new clothes into the country through Chirundu Border Post.
Tapera Kafombori (34), Anyway Mufakose (24), Salimu Libhermen (24), Chagwangwa Wonder (21) and Phiri Archford (31) appeared before the Karoi Magistrates’ Court facing charges of smuggling.
The court heard that on January 25, 2025 at around 10 pm, law enforcement officers received information that the men were transporting smuggled goods using a Toyota Hiace (ACS 9864) carrying 315.8 kg of new clothing and a
Nissan Caravan (AFT 2892) carrying 225.1 kg of new clothing and 50.4 kg of second-hand clothing.
The vehicles were intercepted near the Chirundu dumpsite and were taken to the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) Chirundu.
Officials confirmed that no duty had been paid.
Zimra was prejudiced of ZWG 80 484,78.
The smuggled goods and vehicles were seized by Zimra.
