FIVE teams are set to represent Zimbabwe at this year’s edition of the Zone VI Club Volleyball Championships to be held in Durban, South Africa from December 1-8.
Support Unit (men), University of Zimbabwe (UZ) Wolves (men), Harare City (women), UZ Wolves (women) and Support Unit (women) will represent the country against teams from South Africa, Mozambique, Malawi, Lesotho, Eswatini, Botswana and Namibia in the regional tournament.
Zimbabwe Volleyball Association (ZVA) secretary-general Ringisai Mapondera said all the teams earned their rights to qualify after coming top in the national league.
“Top two teams in the national league have an automatic qualification. However, there are situations where some countries fail to register all their teams giving opportunities for other squads to register in their place. So we have also registered three men teams; NABA, Harare City and Black Rhinos on standby in case other countries fail to take all their teams. For example, we have Mozambique that registered only one team in the women’s category and this gives other countries space to bring in other squads,” said Mapondera.
He said the association is confident the teams will raise the country’s flag high at this year’s event. — @khumzallen
