A 21-year-old Bulawayo man has been sentenced to five years in prison for attempted murder after he stabbed a complainant several times in the chest with a knife.
Mncedisi Ndlovu, who resides at a squatter camp near Hume Park along the Mazai River, appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Ms Sibonginkosi Mkandla facing a charge of attempted murder. He was found guilty as charged.
In passing sentence, the magistrate sentenced Ndlovu to five years imprisonment, with two years suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. The remaining three years are effective.
The complainant in the matter is Dumisani Ncube (30), and the two are not related.
Prosecutor, Ms Tsungai Mutapi told the court that on March 17 at around 7PM, the complainant and the accused were drinking beer together at the squatter camp.
“A misunderstanding arose between the accused and the complainant. The accused then produced a knife and stabbed the complainant several times on the left side of the chest,” said Ms Mutapi.
The court heard that the complainant fell to the ground following the attack.
It is believed that the two may have had a previous dispute, as the exact cause of the misunderstanding was not made clear in court.
The matter was reported to the police, leading to the arrest of the accused person. The complainant was referred to hospital for medical examination, and the medical affidavit was produced in court as an exhibit.
