A 24-YEAR-OLD man escaped a lengthy jail term after savagely attacking his uncle (48) with fists and an electric cable in a bizarre fight over food.
The violent drama occurred in Chipinge under Chief Mutema. The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), without naming the man, said he snapped after his uncle told his wife to prepare enough food for visitors.
The man went berserk, first throttling his uncle before raining heavy punches and resounding slaps on him.
He left his uncle motionless, in a heap. Moments later, he stormed back, this time armed with an electric cable, and lashed the stunned uncle several times until the older man bolted into his bedroom for safety.
The court heard that the victim suffered painful bruises on his hands and shoulders.
The assailant was convicted of physical abuse under the Domestic Violence Act by Chipinge magistrates.
He was slapped with an 18-month jail sentence, but 6 months were suspended on condition of good behaviour. The remaining 12 months were set aside for 420 hours of community service at Musani Primary School.
“This case reinforces how seriously the courts take domestic violence cases,” said the NPAZ.
