THE inaugural six-team Mpumelelo Moyo-bankrolled invitational soccer extravaganza held in St Luke’s last Friday brought double festive delight for the entertainment starved community as widows based in the area went home smiling after being presented with food hampers.
Moyo, a former Daluka Prmiary School and Zwangendaba Secondary School student in Lupane, is a philanthropist based in neighbouring South Africa and he saw it fit to not only bring football, but to put food on the tables of the hordes of widows in the area.
Moyo’s father, Victor Moyo, said he was proud of what his son had done.
“This a rare gesture of celebrating the festive season. I’m grateful to what my son has done and has continued to do for our beloved community. It’s all about helping people and I encourage him to continue because life is not always all about you, but the community that you live in,” said Victor.
Pumula Masuku, who received a food hamper on behalf of aging Velaphi Moyo (89) said: “Mpumelelo Moyo’s spirit of giving back to the community should not die. We need more people like him in this community. These groceries will go a long way in helping us. We are very much grateful and will always count on him.”
The philanthropist has pledged to host a similar soccer tournament in April at Bulawayo’s high density suburb of Magwegwe.
Meanwhile, Moyo dressed the teams that took part in his tournament. The teams were St Luke’s, Strip Road, Sundowns, Gubungani, Mafinyela and Mpume 11.
