THE Bob@92 basketball extravaganza will have some international flavour with four Zambian teams confirming participation at the tournament.
This year’s competition runs from March 4 to 6 in Harare and is held annually to celebrate President Mugabe’s birthday on February 21.
This year, there will be more than basketball on offer with organisers including football, handball, netball and chess and more than 50 schools are expected to participate.
“Zambia will be sending four teams to take part in this year’s edition of the Bob Cup, in a move we hope will add a little international flair and tonnes of entertainment to the competition.
“We are still hoping that Swaziland and Botswana, whom we have also invited, will be able to send some teams as well,” said Tendai Zhakata, chairperson of the organising committee.
Zhakata said the ultimate objective was to have a festival that celebrates President Mugabe’s contribution to sports development.
“We have decided to cater for the juniors by adding sports like football, handball, netball and chess,” he said.
“Harare province will provide roughly 30 schools, while eight schools will come from Bulawayo, Midlands and Mashonaland West respectively. Mashonaland East will be sending only four schools.
“We have secured venues like City Sports Centre, Belvedere Teachers College and Prince Edward School for this sporting jamboree.”
Minister of State for Harare Miriam Chikukwa is expected to officially open the sporting gala.
