Zambia this weekend.
Last year the tournament was called off following the death of Sloriano Massah, who was the secretary-general of the Malawi Table Tennis Federation.
But as Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe prepared to take part at the competition in Lusaka this weekend, the event has been postponed to July 17-17.
Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union president John Muringani said they had been advised by the hosts that the event is now off following the death of former Zambian president Frederick Chiluba last week.
“We had been hoping to leave for Zambia tomorrow (today) but we have been advised that the tournament has been postponed.
“Zambia has declared a period of mourning following the death of Chiluba and during this period all sporting activities are suspended,” said Muringani.
Zimbabwe are hoping to use the Four Nations Tournament as part of their preparations for the All-Africa Games.
ZTTU selected a senior men and women’s team for the competition, which was last held in 2009.
Tanzania won the tournament with Zimbabwe finishing third.
Muringani said the Zambians had confirmed that the new dates for the tourney had been set for July 16 and 17.
The postponement of the tournament could, however come as a blessing in disguise for Zimbabwe as some of the players and coaches will take part in a coaching course.
“We are going to have a coaching course at Prince Edward where an expert from Slovenia will be around.
“There will be over 40 participants at the coaching clinic.
“The first seven days from July 3 to July 7 are for the clinic while the last three days are for a training camp for some of the players who will have been selected from both juniors and seniors,” said Muringani.
