From Brisbane, Germany with love

Gary Smith
I’m from Brisbane, Australia. My son and I are in Zimbabwe for our first Christmas outside the country.
We usually go for holidays, but it has always been around different cities in Australia. So, the experience is great. This is my second time to this Southern African nation, having visited in 1989 during my travels around Africa.
In fact, I was here for a while at the time.
I haven’t seen too much of the country since I have just arrived. However, I can say it was fine in 1989, and that is why I am back here today.
My son and I went to South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and now we are in Zimbabwe. I have noticed that tourism activities here are more concentrated in Victoria Falls, hence, it’s ideal to be here. We’ve done rafting together, and the lad will probably do much more since he is only 15 years old. It’s a pleasant place to be.
It’s safe, too. The only thing we have been told is not to walk around alone at night because of animals. Otherwise one can be a “free spirit” and explore the area.
After this Victoria Falls experience, we will be in Bulawayo and then proceed to Great Zimbabwe. We will see a bit more of the country perhaps when we go to Harare and Bulawayo.
For us, it will be a Christmas with a difference.

This is my first time to visit Zimbabwe and already, I can’t get enough of it!
So far, it’s a great holiday.
I live in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. My husband and I came to Victoria Falls last Tuesday.
We have just come from touring the rainforest to see the waterfall and have done canoeing, too.
We have no rainforest in Germany, so it was refreshingly nice to look at the magnificent Victoria Falls.
I would love to come back here.
And tonight, we will have our last dinner in Victoria Falls before leaving for Hwange, where we will go on a game drive.
We have wild animals in Germany, but I think it’s more natural here.
I would definitely want to come back.
All the people are friendly; we are really excited.
I’ve never been outside Germany for Christmas. So, when my husband and I decided to enjoy a holiday outside the country, we chose Africa and Zimbabwe had to be in the picture. – Interviews and transcriptions by Leonard Ncube.
