IN a crackdown on illegal fuel smuggling, a joint operation by the police Support Unit and Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) in Chipinge led to the recovery 1 030 litres of petrol suspected to have been smuggled from Mozambique.

Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the haul on Sunday.

“On July 6, the joint team intercepted 27-year-old Tuso Munda near the borderline at Southdown Estate. Munda was attempting to enter Zimbabwe through an illegal crossing point,” he said.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said upon searching Munda’s vehicle, the team discovered 4×220 litre metal drums and 5×30 litre plastic containers filled with petrol. Munda was arrested on the spot.

The recovered fuel, valued at approximately US$1,545, was taken to Chipinge Rural Police Station, and will be handed over to ZIMRA officials at the Mount Selinda Border Post for further handling and processing.
