BULAWAYO is in mourning following the death of respected businessman and funeral parlour pioneer, Pitiel Tshuma, the founder and director of Neighbourhood Funeral Services.

Tshuma (64) was among the first indigenous entrepreneurs to venture into the funeral industry back in the 1990s, breaking barriers and setting up one of the city’s most trusted funeral parlours.

Confirming the sad news, Neighbourhood Funeral Services managing director Nkosikhona Mlilo said Tshuma died yesterday morning after battling complications from a stroke.

“Our founder suffered a stroke recently and was rushed to hospital. He underwent an operation but sadly, he did not recover,” said Mlilo.

Beyond running the parlour, Tshuma was also a large-scale producer of coffins and caskets, supplying not only his business but also other players in the industry.

He earned a sterling reputation for giving back to the community, often assisting struggling families in Sizinda, Tshabalala, Nkulumane and Entumbane with free or heavily subsidised services during difficult times.

“To him, the funeral business was more than just work. It was a calling. He had a big heart for the community and always gave back. He had a great relationship with the people,” Mlilo added.

Apart from the funeral industry, Tshuma was also involved in mining and was an active member of the Bulawayo Community Action Group, where he pushed for community development initiatives.

Tshuma is survived by his wife, Simangele Heather Tshuma, five children and three grandchildren.
Mourners are gathered at House Number 2251, Nkulumane 5, and he is set to be buried on Tuesday.

His death leaves a huge void in Bulawayo’s business landscape, with many describing him as a visionary leader who turned grief into dignity for countless families.
