THE Footballers’ Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ) has secured a sponsorship deal for its members and players, which will see outstanding individuals in both the men’s and women’s games receiving R5,000 each month from the Pocket Group of Companies.
Edwin Anderson, the chief executive officer of the Pocket Group, announced the partnership on Friday during the FUZ Awards held in Harare, confirming that his organisation would sponsor the Desmond Maringwa-led union throughout 2025. The deal will also extend support to former footballers.
Founded in 2003, FUZ is an organisation dedicated to championing the rights and welfare of current and former footballers in Zimbabwe. It is led by former Dynamos star Desmond Maringwa, with Wonder Sithole serving as secretary-general.
“We are going to sponsor various aspects of the lives of players who are members of FUZ. Through T and R Life, we will provide funeral cover, offer stipends upon retirement and even assist with groceries where possible, as we did with George Shaya in his final days.
“Our aim is to provide a stipend that covers the basic needs of a family, as long as the player or former player is a member of FUZ. The union will have the final say in all instances,” said Anderson.
He added that the Pocket Mobile money platform, which includes a banking service and in-store facility, would be utilised to assist former players.
Anderson also announced the sponsorship of the FUZ Player of the Month award, committing R5 000 each month for the most outstanding male player and an equal amount for the top female player.
“The technical aspects of player selection are entirely managed by FUZ. We are satisfied with the way they conduct their business. Every month, we are committing R10 000, split evenly between the men’s and women’s leagues,” said Anderson.
He further stated that the Pocket Group would also sponsor the annual awards at the end of the year.
Speaking at the event, Maringwa expressed his gratitude to Anderson and the Pocket Group for their support.
“We are pleased to attract corporate partners and aim to give them value for money through good governance. We look forward to collaborating with Anderson and T and R Life,” said Maringwa.
He described the partnership as a significant development that would help revitalise Zimbabwean football and bring back the sparkle the sport has been yearning for.
