THE Zimbabwe Ladies Golf union (ZLGU) president, Olivia Nyamwanza, has rallied behind the girls’ team set to compete at the 2026 All Africa Junior Team Championships.
The championships are scheduled for Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club in Nairobi, Kenya from Sunday.
The junior girls’ team set to fly the country’s flag high at the continental showdown is made up of Miriam Masiya, Lily Ascott (captain), Zarina Makwarimba, Mikayla Nyazika (reserve), and Jessie Nyakatawa, who will travel with the team as coach and chairperson.
Speaking to Zimpapers Sports Hub, Nyamwanza said that she is confident that the team will put up a brilliant performance as they have been hard at work over the past couple of months.
“Our young proteges have been training intensively under the two national teams. Simon Murungweni and Jessie Nyakatawa for the past three months.
“Go team Zim. We are behind you all the way.
“Girls, after the intensive three months of training, only good things can come out of this. You work hard, you get lucky. Remember what you have been taught and put it into practice.
“Most of all relax, have fun and bring the trophy home. We are with you all the way,” she said.
Over 120 junior golfers from across 14 African countries are set to compete in the prestigious tournament. African Golf Confederation (AGC) president Johnson Omolo said this tournament, which provides a ticket to the Junior Golf World Cup for both boys and girls, is pivotal in developing the youngsters’ skills.
“This annual event, hosted in the heart of Africa, serves as a pivotal qualifier for the prestigious Junior Golf World Cup in Japan, offering winners in the boys’ and girls’ team categories a unique opportunity to represent Africa on the global stage.
“At the Africa Golf Confederation, our mission is to provide junior golfers with platforms to compete, develop their skills, and foster lifelong friendships. I’m delighted to see this year’s event taking place in Kenya, a country with a rich golfing heritage.”
