CONSTRUCTION of the new Globe and Phoenix Primary School in Kwekwe, Midlands Province, is progressing well and technicians are working around the clock to ensure relocation to the new site by early next year.
The new school project follows the decommissioning of the old Globe and Phoenix Primary School in March last year when underground mining tunnels caused classroom to collapse. Since then, learners and staff have been operating from temporary facilities set up at Sally Mugabe Primary School grounds.
The new facility is expected to provide a safer and more conducive learning environment, addressing the challenges faced by learners and staff since the collapse of the old facility.
Government partnered with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to expedite the construction. The church has completed the necessary feasibility studies and is set to ramp up involvement in early 2025.
In an interview, Kwekwe District Development Co-ordinator, Mr Fortune Mupungu, said construction is progressing steadily, with the foundation nearing completion.
“We are finalising the foundation as we prepare for the rainy season. Our goal is to lay the slab and relocate the tents to the new site early next year. All is well at the campsite and lessons are going well with no disturbances,” he said.
“This year, we haven’t faced any disturbances from strong winds, unlike previous years. Lessons are proceeding smoothly, and our team is monitoring the situation to ensure continuity.”
Mr Mupungu, who also chairs the district civil protection committee, expressed optimism about meeting the relocation timeline, adding that the new site offers better conditions compared to the current makeshift arrangements.
The Department of Public Works, supported by staff from Kwekwe Polytechnic, is spearheading the construction efforts.
Despite the progress, Mr Mupungu said there is a need for additional resources to complete the project.
“We are still mobilising resources and welcome support from any individuals or organisations willing to assist,” he said.
