AN 18-year-old drunk teenager from Gokwe lied to his 78-year-old grandmother that he was afraid of going home alone as he was seeing short people which he suspected to be goblins, before forcing himself into the old woman’s blankets and raped her.
The teenager, of Mloyi village under Chief Jahana pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Gokwe magistrate Mr Christopher Maturure for raping his paternal grandmother last week. Mr Maturure remanded the teenager in custody to 21 June for commencement of trial. Prosecutor Mr Tinei Tirigo told the court that on 4 May at around 7pm, the old woman retired to bed in her bedroom hut. During the night, the teenager returned from a beer binge at the nearby shops and went to his grandmother’s hut.
“He started knocking and calling her name, begging her to open the door,” Mr Tirigo told the court.
The court heard that the boy then forcibly opened the door and told his grandmother that he was afraid of going home, which is a short distance away as he was hearing voices and seeing short people he suspected to be goblins.
The grandmother offered to accompany the teenager but he insisted on sleeping in the hut saying he would rather wait until morning. The court heard that the grandmother told the teenager to take some blankets and go and sleep in the spare bedroom but he refused insisting he was afraid to sleep alone.
“The grandmother gave up and offered him a separate blanket to sleep in the room,” Mr Tirigo told the court.
During the night, the court heard, the teenager demanded to have sex with the old woman but she refused. He then threatened his grandmother with unspecified action before he forced himself on her. He went on to rape her twice during the same night. In the morning, the grandmother told her son who is the teenager’s father of what had happened. The two reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of the teenager.
