A FIGTREE domestic worker broke into her employer’s bedroom and stole $2 200 and R300 before fleeing, police have confirmed.
Acting Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Joram Sithole confirmed the incident that occurred on Wednesday around 10am, at Mncwazini Village in Figtree.
He said Sifunuthando Sibanda whose particulars are not known stole from Mr Daniel Ndlovu before she fled from the homestead.
“I can confirm that we are investigating a case of theft which occurred on Wednesday where a domestic worker, Sifunuthando Sibanda whose particulars are unknown stole $2 200 and R300 from her employer, Daniel Ndlovu.
‘‘Mr Ndlovu hired Sibanda as a domestic worker. During his absence on 22 May around 10am she used an unknown object to open the bedroom door which was locked and stole the cash,’’ said Asst Insp Sithole.
He said when Mr Ndlovu returned home that is when he discovered that his money had been stolen and Sibanda was not at home.
Asst Insp Sithole advised people to make sure that they see and note identity particulars of their prospective employees before hiring them.
He also urged members of the public to desist from keeping large sums of money at home.
“It’s important for people to request the particulars of people they intend to hire such as the National Identity Card and their place of residence. In this case Mr Ndlovu did not know Sibanda’s place of origin, home and relatives. This makes it difficult for the police to track the suspect.
“At the same time people shouldn’t keep large sums of money at their homes but rather they should take it to the banks,” said Asst Insp Sithole.
In another case, a businessman from Maphisa Growth Point in Kezi lost $9 000 and R50 000 cash and 20 cellphones valued at $2 225 to thieves who broke into his car while it was parked at a business centre.
“I can confirm that we are investigating a case of theft where Mr Thulani Ngwenya, a businessman from Maphisa area lost his cash and cellphones. Mr Ngwenya arrived at Maphisa Growth Point around 9pm and parked his vehicle in front of Focus Shop. After an hour he returned to his car and found one of the windows broken. He checked his valuables and discovered that $9 000, R50 000 and 20 cellphones valued at $2 225 had been stolen. The matter was reported to the police who attended the scene but the culprits had fled and no one had identified them,” he said.
Asst Insp Sithole appealed to the public who could have information on the whereabouts of the culprits to report to any police station near them.
He also urged people to desist from keeping large sums of money in their possession.
Asst Insp Sithole advised motorists to ensure that their vehicles were parked in a safe place, especially at night.
“As police we continue to urge people to desist from keeping large sums of money in their possession as that attracts thieves. People should embrace the concept of plastic money as it is safer.
“Also motorists are urged to park their vehicle in safe places at night such as guarded premises in order to avoid being robbed. It is also important for motorists to take out their valuables when they park cars as some may attract thieves if they are visible from the outside,” he said.
Meanwhile, Asst Insp Sithole said police have also launched a manhunt for a man who stole a detector valued at R3 600 from Vova Mine in Collen Bawn on Monday.
He said miners were working at a mine which belongs to Mr Aphet Ncube when Thokozani Dube approached them, stole a detector and went away unnoticed.
