Looking at the unseen
PSALM 46:1-2
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
[2] Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.
David had been through many dangers, toils and snares. He had survived the attack of a lion and bear.
He had survived the battle with Goliath. He fought Philistines and came out alive. He had run away from his son, Absalom. He had evaded Saul and all his traps.
He was a small and insignificant son of his father. He did not feature even in the mind of his father as one who could be considered in the discussion about who could become a king.
It was at the insistence of Samuel that he was brought in when none of his brothers who were better placed to become kings were qualified.
He was forgotten and herding sheep when kingship issues were discussed. God brought David into the race of kings. He was not in the equation, but God brought him in.
David had no sword in his hand when he approached Goliath. He had no military training. Goliath was a warrior from his youth. David was a shepherd. He went in the Name of his God.
It was not the sling that did the job. It was his God Who took hold of the stone as it came out of the sling and directed it to the forehead of Goliath.
When Goliath came down, David cut off his head, using Goliath’s own sword. It was God Who was his very present help. A sling alone could not do it. David alone could not accomplish that feat.
It was when David looked back to all these experiences in his life that David concluded that God was always a very present help in every circumstance.
God is a refuge and a very present help. A refuge is a place one runs to and seeks sanctuary from danger.
God was always David’s place of resort.
Jesus said He would be with us always, to the end of the world. He will never leave nor forsake us.
Hebrews 13:5: “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
He is a friend that sticks closer than a brother. He is always present.
When you pass through the fire, He will be with you. When you pass through the water, He would with you. There is nothing to fear.
Isaiah 43:2 says: “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”
Exodus 33:14-15: “And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. [15] And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.”
Moses wanted God to be present with him.
In Matthew 10:18-20, the Bible admonishes us not to think about what we should say when we are in a tight situation.
It says: “And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles. [19] But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. [20] For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.”
When you are put in a corner, and do not know what to say, God as a very present help will give you words to say.
God was a present help to Daniel in the den of lions. He was present to help the three Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace.
I read a story recently that some dogs were chasing a rabbit in an open field. The rabbit had nowhere to hide, but ran right into the legs of a man who was standing in that open field. The man took the rabbit up in his arms and raised it so high that the dogs which were trying to catch it could not catch it. The man kicked the dogs away.
He said as its weakness, the rabbit had appealed to his strength. No dogs could take it away from his protective hands.
When we come to Christ, our weaknesses would have sought refuge in His strength. There are not enough demons from the pits of hell that can take away from His hands.
