Golf awards on tonight

THE second edition of the annual Zimbabwe Golf Awards will be held this evening at Warren Hills with, William Lake nominated for the Best Professional Golfer award.

Lake has had a good season and has been the best of the local players on the Sunshine Tour.

He was the best-placed local player at the Zimbabwe Open this year and is currently the highest-placed local player on the Sunshine Tour order of merit in 70th place. Ryan Cairns is in 72nd place, while Tongo Charamba is in 171st place.

Last year, United States-based professional Brendon De Jonge was named the best golfer, but appears to have been overlooked this time around. He finished on even par in the first round of the Travellers Championship at the TPC River Highlands at Cromwell in the United States yesterday.

The Zimbabwean did not play in last week’s US Open and had a good round at Cromwell in the $6,4 million purse tournament.

The event is De Jonge’s 21th and he has made 16 cuts to his credit and has a single top 10 finish.
