After a large crowd braved the chilly weather last Thursday evening for Simon Mutambi’s 12th album launch at Steak House in Waterfalls, Harare, a famous street musician, Daniel Gonora, stole the show.
Gonora and his band were invited to the event as the curtain raisers.
As they belted out their new song “Wotokuchidzira Kuti Zviibve”, they touched the souls of many revellers who were in the building.
On several occasions, the fans asked for more.
As the visually impaired Gonora charmed fans, Mutambi burst into tears.
He even offered to double the money he had agreed to pay him.
“I’m so touched to see my fans showing love to this old man, he has been performing in the streets for years, but I have never seen him receiving this kind of love and support,” said Mutambi.
“I’m pledging to double his payment because he stole the show today.”
Mutambi also pledged to call Gonora on his forthcoming live shows so that he gets the platform to perform countrywide.
“From today onwards, I will invite Gonora so that we perform together during my live shows. He needs to get recognised countrywide,” he said.
Mutambi’s album launch was a great success and it wrecked in a whopping US$16 000.
Mutambi and Gonora have a long history together, with Gonora’s son, Isaac, being Mutambi’s drummer.
Mutambi scouted Isaac about five years ago as he was playing drums for his father in the streets.
