Goromonzi Rural District Council (RDC)has received its own fire tender from central Government as part of a programme to ensure all local authorities can cope with fires.
Goromonzi now has a fairly large urban development from Domboshava down its western boundary and across the south of the district, centred on the huge Caledonia urban settlement and more major highways, with their attendant accidents, now spanning the district. The fire tender is seen as crucial for their disaster response.
The Second Republic under President Mnangagwa has received commendation for its efforts to empower local authorities, aligning with the Call to Action, No Compromise to Service Delivery blueprint launched by the President.
In an interview with The Herald following a council meeting, Goromonzi Rural District Council vice chairperson Councillor Spiwe Musekiwa expressed gratitude for Government’s support.
“As a council, we are humbled to receive this critical equipment from the Government. President Mnangagwa is a man of his word; whatever he promises, he fulfils. This fire tender is essential for responding to fire incidents and other disasters, ultimately enhancing service delivery and saving lives.”
Councillor Musekiwa said the new fire tender would improve their ability to manage emergencies, thereby motivating councillors to work harder.
Mrs Prisca Dube, the Goromonzi district development coordinator, highlighted the frequent disasters faced by the district, including veld fires and road traffic accidents.
“We experience a lot of disasters, especially road traffic incidents where vehicles are often destroyed by fire. Previously, we had to rely on Harare City Council for assistance. Now, with our own fire tender, we are well-prepared to respond effectively.”
The provision of the fire tender marks a significant step in the Government’s commitment to capacitating local authorities, ultimately improving service delivery and community safety in Goromonzi.
