The project has already started after the Government awarded a tender to a private firm, Fruitstone Investment.
An official of the contractor who preferred anonymity said the project was already rolling. “Our crew is on the ground as we speak. The project started in September and we have covered a lot of ground. We expect to complete it soon,” said the official.
The Member of Parliament for the area, who is also the Minister of Public Works, Mr Joel Gabbuza Gabuza confirmed the development.
“What I know is that the project involves resurfacing and pothole filling. From Binga to Kamativi it is about 125km. This is a very busy road that is used by tourists,” said Mr Gabuza.
“The rehabilitation of the road is a welcome move ahead of the World Tourism Convention in Victoria Falls. Binga is closer to Victoria Falls than Bulawayo and we are expecting to benefit from this event. We have an airstrip in the district and delegates can make bookings in our lodges and fly to Victoria Falls.”
Binga is one of the country’s favourite tourist destinations, especially with its fishing and boat cruise facilities at the mighty Zambezi River.
Contacted for comment an official of the Ministry of Transport, Communication and Infrastructure Development in Matabeleland North, identified as Mr Mlauzi, also confirmed the project but declined to give details.
“What do you want to know about the project? Put your questions in writing and bring them to our offices,” said Mr Mlauzi.
