“The Treasury and the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare (MLSW) will mobilise some resources to enable resumption of payments of their allowances for the period of May 2013 for processing by end of June 2013 and onwards,” said Mr Pfungwa Kunaka, a Principal Director in the Ministry of Finance.
The disbursement of funds to disabled persons was stopped in January 2012 owing to budgetary constraints.
“We acknowledge that due to budgetary constraints it has not been possible to meet a number of government obligations and this was not out of design or choice,” he said after meeting officials of the Centre for Persons with Disability.
Some of the disabled people who were protesting carried placards that read: “We are the forgotten tribe,” and “Disability is a natural part of life that will impact everyone in some way at some point in his or her life-time.Why should we be left to suffer and hunger.”
Mr Tapiwa Tsikayi, who was disabled, welcomed the announcement made by the Government to pay the social grants.
