IT was a pleasure to visit Justin Kisimisi’s garden in Sandton, a medium-density suburb beyond Westgate, Harare.
He has made great efforts to come up with a beautiful garden, despite his many dog companions. They live harmoniously with him, though.
The garden is the envy of his neighbours. It is impossible to miss it as you pass by.
The greening-up project is changing the neighbourhood’s outlook.

Greening for a better future involves transforming our lifestyles, communities and economies to prioritise environmental sustainability. This must also include reducing pollution and promoting renewable energy.
It also involves waste reduction, renewable energy, green infrastructure and community education. The efforts create more sustainable and resilient communities.
Our focus should be on developing and expanding green infrastructure.
This entails establishing green spaces such as community parks and tree planting projects to enhance biodiversity. It helps improve air and water quality, and creates cooler urban environments.

Greening projects should encompass tree planting and reforestation in both urban and rural communities to combat deforestation, reduce carbon emissions and restore local ecosystems.
Concerted efforts by all stakeholders such as local authorities, non-governmental organisations and the Government are needed to establish parks and educate the public on the value of planting shrubs and trees. We need to inculcate a culture of visiting parks and gardens for relaxation and social gatherings.
Greening will also help raise funds for the less-privileged members of our communities by channelling entrance fees towards that cause.
Greening for the future is a goal all countries must strive to achieve, prioritising nature over concrete jungles.
