JUST two months after unknown men robbed Municipality of Chinhoyi of US$16 000 in cash, five unknown assailants covering their faces with woollen hats and armed with a pistol ransacked council offices at around 3am yesterday.
The gang pounced on two security personnel who were on duty.
Mashonaland West Police Spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera, told H- Metro, the gang assaulted the security personnel and later tied their hands and legs with shoe laces and charger cables.
Kohwera said the suspects broke into the licensing office and put the security guards in the room.
He said they went on to blast the safe in the office using explosives but fortunately there was no cash since it has been banked.
Kohwera said they also broke into several offices, but they did not take anything.
“They later took one of the security personnel’s Vivo cellphone and disappeared leaving the two tied in the office,” said Kohwera.
He said the security personnel called for help and were heard by another security personnel on duty at the nearby Agribank premises at around 6am, who informed Police.
Kohwera said police attended the scene and investigations are still underway. Kohwera applauded Karoi Town Council for heeding the call to avoid keeping large sums of money in safes.
“We implore institutions and individuals to bank their money regularly to avoid falling prey to robbers.
“We also appeal to anyone with information that can assist Police to arrest the suspects to approach any nearest Police station,” said Kohwera.
