The Ministry of Health and Child Care, has launched the Drug-Free Livelihoods Centre, a nationwide initiative aimed at rehabilitating drug users and helping them reintegrate into society through skills training and financial support.

Brighton Mufakidzwa, the focal person at the Ministry of Health and Child Care, urged drug abusers and recovering addicts to come forward and register at designated centres for assistance.

“We have established eight centres, including Old Highfield Day in Highfield, Tsiga Grounds Centre in Mbare, Sally Mugabe Halfway Hall, Kambuzuma, Warren Park, Chitubu, Tendai Ward(Beatrice Infectious)  and Matapi.”

“Registering is completely free, and those who sign up will receive small start-up loans to begin their own businesses.”

The initiative also includes short vocational courses such as sewing and baking, alongside sporting activities like football, volleyball, and gymnastics.

These activities are intended to keep the youth engaged and reduce the temptation of returning to drug use.

“When young people have nothing to do, they often turn to drugs. We want to ensure they stay productive and focused on positive activities.

“To ensure commitment to the programme, registered participants will undergo weekly drug tests. Those who relapse will be referred to rehabilitation centres for further treatment,” he said.

He also said, Zimbabwe has been battling  with the surge in drug and substance abuse, particularly among the youth and a number of young people turn to drugs due to unemployment, peer pressure, depression, and lack of recreational activities.

“This project aims to help people abstain from drugs and build a better future.

“We urge all those struggling with addiction to take advantage of this opportunity and change their lives.

“The initiative is expected to reduce drug abuse cases, empower young people with life skills, and ultimately create a healthier and more productive society,” he said.
