DONKEYS in Gwanda district are about to get the VIP treatment, thanks to a life-changing initiative that will see three mobile donkey clinics rolled out in August.
The AWARE-SPANA Zimbabwe project, which champions the welfare of working animals, has confirmed that the mobile clinics will be stationed at Takaliyawa (August 5), Manama (August 6), and Nhwali (August 7). The move is set to revolutionise donkey care in rural Matabeleland South.

AWARE-SPANA is a collaboration between AWARE Trust Zimbabwe and the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA). The focus? Giving donkeys the same attention often reserved for cattle and goats.
In a letter dated 22 July, 2025, and addressed to Gwanda South MP and Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Omphile Marupi, AWARE SPANA Zimbabwe country director Dr Keith Dutlow hailed the MP’s commitment to donkey welfare.
“We are pleased to acknowledge your proposal regarding the initiation of mobile donkey clinics and wish to express AWARE SPANA Zimbabwe’s readiness to support this noble initiative,” wrote Dr Dutlow.
He added: “This effort will address donkey welfare and strengthen owners’ ability to care for their animals. Our team looks forward to working closely with your office and other stakeholders to ensure the successful rollout of these clinics.”
Dr Marupi, a vocal advocate for animal care, said the clinics were long overdue.
“Having grown up using donkeys for draught power and other home chores, I felt the donkeys needed similar attention and care given to cattle and goats. Hence, the donkey clinic,” said the Deputy Minister.
“Due to the harsh drought, donkeys have always survived though with some drought-related remnants such as diseases.”
Gwanda has been turning heads in recent months for taking donkey welfare seriously. In May, the district hosted World Donkey Day commemorations under the theme: “Donkeys serving as the shoulders, legs, arms and backs of women in rural Zimbabwe.” The event was held at Manama Business Centre in Ward 17.
AWARE-SPANA’s mobile clinics are expected to offer free veterinary care, including treatments for wounds, lameness, and common illnesses—issues often ignored despite donkeys being the backbone of many rural households.
The humble donkey, often mistreated or neglected, is finally getting its moment of care and recognition.
