As part of the smart water meter installation contract between the City of Harare and Helcraw, more than 20 cars have already been bought in preparation for the roll out of the pre-paid meters in the capital.

The vehicles will be used to ensure timely attendance to leaks, repairs and during the roll out of the smart meter project.

Harare mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume told a full council meeting last week that Helcraw is ready to start installing the smart water meters.

“They are having an implementation meeting with our water department,” Cllr Mafume said.

“We have agreed on a number of works to be done at Morton Jaffray waterworks, where the situation is getting worse by the day and requires urgent intervention.”

On a brighter note, Cllr Mafume said the city received a donation of water purification chemicals from the Government.

“The Government has bought probably 300 tonnes of chemicals that are being delivered to Morton Jaffray as we speak,” he said.

“These interventions are a response to the letter that we wrote in which we asked for assistance in relation to water and sewer. So the work on water is beginning.”

Cllr Mafume said the Government will ensure the supply of chemicals for six months.

“The money is being given to us by the Government through their preferred contractor,” he said.

Cllr Mafume said there is a pumping model being designed for smart meters, whose funding model will be explained and put into effect.

“The director of water, the town clerk, chamber secretary, acting town clerk Mr Addmore Nhekairo, Engineer Kunyadini and I were heavily involved in working and engaging on this contract and it is now being implemented,” he said
