The Harare City Council (HCC) has shut down Prince Edward water treatment plant owing to depleting raw water levels in two of the city’s catchment dams.
HCC has two water treatment plants, Morton Jaffray and Prince Edward, whose closure will result in Harare and its dormitory town of Chitungwiza, Norton and Ruwa losing about 60 mega litres of water. Morton Jaffray, the major plant has an installed capacity of producing 614 mega litres per day while for Prince Edward it’s 90 mega litres against the city’s daily demand of approximately 800 mega litres.
Morton Jaffray is supplied by Lake Chivero and Lake Manyame whilst Prince Edward gets water from Harava and Seke Dams.
Council spokesperson Stanley Gama said the plant will only be recommissioned when the two days fill up most likely during the coming rainy season.
“The City of Harare wishes to inform residents that we have temporarily de-commissioned Prince Edward Water treatment plant near Chitungwiza as the two dams that feed into waterworks — Harava and Seke have dried up,” he said.
“We can no longer draw water from the two dams, Prince Edward will only be recommissioned when the two days fill up most likely during the coming rainy season.”
Gama said areas that are likely to be affected include among others, Chitungwiza, Hatfield, Airport, Waterfalls and Msasa.
“However, efforts are being made to boost water supplies in the areas affected by Morton Jaffray Waterworks in Norton.”
