DRINKING excessive illicit beer in Mozambique saw a Chipinge man drowning in a river on his way back home recently.
Headman Mutumwa (45) was invited to a beer drink in Mozambique by his friends on July 24 and travelled to the neighbouring country using an illegal crossing point.
Chipinge District police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Blessing Kadzuraumera, confirmed the incident and said: “On July 24, Headman Mutumwa left his homestead proceeding to Mozambique for a beer binge. He drank kachasu and on his way back he failed to locate the path he had used to travel to Mozambique. He wandered into Mwangazi River where he drowned. His body was found floating in the river by Theophanous Mhlanga on August 1.

“In his pocket there was a 750 ml bottle filled with kachasu. He positively identified the deceased and alerted his wife Elizabeth Posheri (32). A police report was made,” he said.

In an unrelated incident which occurred at Machona Village under Chief Garahwa’s area of Chipinge South, a six-year-old juvenile slipped off from a Masau Tree where he was harvesting fruits and fell into an open well.

Asst Insp Kadzuraumera said Courage Gweba drowned in the well.
“Courage and his brother, Zondai Gweba (10) left home to collect Masau fruits about 100m from their home. While they were picking Masau fruits, Courage slipped off and fell into an uncovered well which is approximately 15m deep. Zondai rushed home and informed his father, Lyson Gweba about the incident. Lyson rushed to the well, but failed to rescue his son. He sought for assistance from neighbours, but it was too late,” he said.
