The elder son of national hero Cde Kantibai Patel, prominent businessman Cde Yogeshkumar Kantibhai Patel has died.
He was 55.
Cde Patel (pictured) collapsed and died yesterday morning while participating in a 50km Shamva Cycling Race in Mashonaland Central province.
Family spokesperson Cde Vijay Patel, a young brother to the late national hero, told The Sunday Mail that Mr Patel had not complained of any health problems.
“He was fit and that is why he even entered in the cycling race. He loved the sport and it was his wish to participate. But unfortunately he passed out during the race and was pronounced dead. His body is at Parirenyatwa (Group of Hospitals) Mortuary,” said the family spokesperson.
“We are arranging a cremation and have tentatively set that for Tuesday at Pioneer Hindu Crematorium in Harare where burial of the ashes will also take place.”
The late Cde Patel was active in supporting Zanu-PF activities together with other members of the Asian community.
Zanu-PF Harare Central District One chair Cde Abraham Samushonga said: “The death of Cde Patel is a sad loss to the party. He was very supportive of our party programmes. He did not fall back and continued from where his father left.”
Mourners are gathered at number 31 Anson Road Ridgeview, Belvedere in Harare.
Cde Patel is survived by his wife Leenaben and son Gaurang and daughter Bansari.
