PREPARATIONS for this year’s Heroes’ Day celebrations are progressing well with a traditional bash slated for the eve of the main event on August 9. The celebrations entertainment committee chairperson, Cde Enock Dzumbira, said the traditional bash would be the first of its kind as it would give those in attendance a chance to take a deep introspection of the liberation struggle.
“This year we are celebrating Heroes’ Day in a unique manner. We will hold a traditional bash which will start at 6pm at the Manicaland Provincial Heroes’ Acre on August 9. We have prepared three drums of opaque beer, courtesy of Chief Zimunya and we want people to come in their numbers to join the nation in commemorating this important day.
“Proper celebrations will start the following day at 8am. We are encouraging people to come out in their numbers so that we celebrate as one big family,” he said.
As per the province’s tradition, a marathon will also be held and winners will receive their prizes from Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Cde Mandi Chimene at Mutare Teachers’ College.
Said Cde Dzumbira: “Our marathon will start at the Manicaland Provincial Heroes’ Acre and the finishing line is at Mutare Teachers’ College where winners will receive their prizes.
“Everyone is free to participate in the marathon from the uniformed forces to the general members of the public because it is everyone’s event.
“Entertainment has also been lined up from Ben Arinoti, Chinyauhwera. Traditional Dance Group and local schools,” he said.
As part of the entertainment line-up, eight local schools will also compete in a music competition.
They will be singing the Mwana Wevhu Rangarira Magamba song, with the winning school also expected to walk away with a prize.
He said those willing to make donations towards the successful hosting of the event could see him at the Government Complex along Robert Mugabe Road in Mutare.
