HIGHLANDERS is renowned for having footballing brothers within its ranks.
It is no wonder that the 2025 team has Mason and Mackinnon Mushore chasing a dream like those who were at the club before.
In interviews with Zimpapers Sports Hub on Tuesday, both brothers said they feel the challenge to win things at the club and emulate the successful careers enjoyed by some of the brothers who played for the club.
“You can only be remembered by winning trophies,” said Mackinnon, the elder brother.
Mason is a midfield destroyer who has found his mojo and is the man of the moment in Zimbabwean football while Mackinnon has over the past three seasons been outstanding as an attacking star with a penchant for taking on opposition players as if for fun.
At its inception, Highlanders had the Khumalo brothers, Albert and Rhodes, masterminding the club’s formation for recreation purposes. This was after they had gotten afflicted to the game while at Loveday Institute in South Africa.
Out of boredom, they got other boys of their age who included Nsele and Jeremiah Hlabangana, the Ngcebetsha brothers.
They have been sets of brothers like the Ndlovus – Adam, Marko, Madinda and Peter, the Mloyis – Tennyson and Douglas, Soma-Phiris – Amini and Makwinji, Makhandas – Gibson and Chester, Luphahlas – Kainot and Willie, Boonzaier – Neil and Allan, Mckops – Tyrone and Pernell, Phiris – Kingston and Lawrence, Dzowa/Tsumbes – Edward, Kenneth and Paul, Mabalekas – Phineas and Tymon, Sibandas – Cephas and Sebastian, Chiezas – Itai and Winston, Mpofus – Jeffrey and Mike, Nxumalos – Josiah, Enock and James, Masawis – Itai and Thabani, Tito and Francis Paketh, Ncubes – Dan and Summer.
The above list of brothers had varying levels of success relative to their generations.
