Hip-Hop grapples with controversy: Kwela Initiative Indaba sparks fiery debate in Bulawayo

SHOULD artistes use controversy as a strategy in 2026? This was the question posed by Asaph Afrika as he spearheaded the second, “Hip Hop vs The Community Indaba” held at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo on Monday.

This split opinions between the hip hop divide, with some neither here nor there.

Among the attendees were the 2026 Kwela Initiative cohort, who are set to join 16 of Bulawayo’s most dynamic voices who were selected to channel the Indaba’s themes into music during the camp last year. The diverse line-up included Swazy, Stones Moyo, Fuel The Don, Curtis Dee Rovar, Nsizwa Black, TBK, Farai, Ghawdzilla, Israel, CMK, Mike the Future, Salem Bhebhe, KidThrill, Philo Cliff, Canvus Ports, and RyZoN. Together, they crafted a 12-track album that reflects the struggles, aspirations, and resilience of the city’s youth.

The Kwela Initiative, spearheaded by music producer Leemzy M and rapper Asaph Afrika, is dedicated to fostering artistic growth within the local hip-hop circuit. Monday’s indaba, however, dove headfirst into a contentious industry tactic.

Asaph Afrika’s provocative question – “Should artistes use controversy as a strategy in 2026?” – ignited a passionate and often polarising discussion among the assembled artistes and industry figures.

Throwing a veritable cat among the pigeons, the debate quickly expanded beyond simple shock value. Participants grappled with the complex realities of modern music promotion, dissecting the implications of “cancel culture”, the phenomenon of “hate-listening” (where negative attention still drives streams), and crucially, the morality of deliberately courting controversy for career advancement.

Opinions were fiercely divided, reflecting a global tension within the genre between artistic expression, commercial strategy, and social responsibility.

The timing and focus of the debate were far from coincidental. The spectre of last year’s significant controversy involving the Kwela Initiative itself loomed large. Rapper Briza’s release of the scathing diss track, “Liyakwelana”, targeting several Kwela members, generated immense buzz and heated division within the local hip-hop community. While the Initiative ultimately weathered the storm, choosing to “survive and ignore” the direct attack, the incident served as a potent real-world case study.

The fallout from “Liyakwelana” likely sired the critical need to formally discuss the role and impact of controversy within the “bars, metaphors, and rhymes game.” The discussion explored whether the short-term buzz generated by such tactics outweighed potential long-term damage to reputations, artiste cohesion, brand contamination, and the broader perception of the local hip-hop scene.

As the intense debate subsided, the focus returned to the core purpose of the Kwela camp: creation.

Registered artistes channelled the energy and themes explored during the indaba, alongside the broader concepts of community and resilience, into their collaborative project. Asaph Afrika also revealed that the Kwela Initiative is set to expand to other provinces.

The resulting 12-track album, born from this crucible of discussion and creativity, stands as a tangible outcome, poised to give voice to the multifaceted experiences of Bulawayo’s youth.

Whether the controversy debate will directly influence the album’s content or the artistes’ future strategies remains to be heard, but the conversation has undeniably been thrust into the spotlight of Zimbabwe’s evolving hip-hop landscape. – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
