A BLOODY accident on Khami Road near the Flyover left one man dead and several injured after a speeding kombi driver knocked down a pedestrian and fled, only to return minutes later pretending to be a witness.
The tragedy struck around 7PM on Tuesday. Bhekinkosi Sibanda (35) of Pumula North drove his Toyota Hiace into a man estimated to be about 40 years old who was crossing the road. The victim died instantly after suffering multiple fractures and severe head injuries.

Instead of helping, Sibanda sped off, leaving the man’s body sprawled in the middle of the road. Moments later another Toyota Hiace carrying four passengers slowed down after the driver spotted the corpse. But disaster struck when a Toyota Alex driven by 19-year-old Dumile Ndlovu of Pumula South rammed into the Hiace, overturning it and injuring two passengers.

Shockingly, Sibanda later returned to the scene and claimed to be a witness. His cover was blown when police inspected his kombi and found a shattered windscreen, a broken mirror and blood stains. He was immediately arrested.
Police have since charged him with culpable homicide for speeding and failing to keep a proper lookout, while Ndlovu faces charges of negligent driving.

“We encourage drivers to exercise proper lookout when driving and to desist from running away after an accident,” said Bulawayo police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu.
Relatives of missing persons are urged to visit United Bulawayo Hospital or their nearest police station for body identification.
