Police spokesperson Inspector Blessing Chishaka yesterday said 57 people were injured during this year’s independence holiday and police issued 11 036 tickets to motorists for committing various offences.
“Most of these accidents have been attributed to speeding, overtaking errors, misjudgment and failing to obey traffic regulations,” he said.
Insp Chishaka urged motorists to observe traffic regulations.
He said police will remain on the roads to ensure there is sanity.
The independence holiday came a few days after 21 people perished when a Beitbridge-bound bus veered off the road and crashed into a tree along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road on Monday morning.
The driver of the MegaLink bus reportedly failed to negotiate a curve at the 92km peg at around 2am.
Police impounded 121 unregistered and unroadworthy vehicles during the holiday. This brings the total number to 721 of such vehicles that have been impounded since early this month. Most of the unregistered vehicles were believed to be used in committing crimes while others were involved in accidents and the drivers sped off. The vehicles, which are parked at police stations in Harare, will only be released after the owners obtain required documents.
