THE scenic Honde Valley will be the epicentre of endurance and excitement on April 19 as it hosts the much-anticipated 60km Ultra Marathon and 10km Fun Run.
Organised as a unique opportunity for long-distance runners, the event is, not just a test of endurance, but a crucial training platform for those eyeing the prestigious Comrades Marathon in South Africa, slated for the first week of June.
In an interview, the event organiser, Alois Bunjira, said the 60km stretch is not a competitive race, but rather a training run.
“We are also giving athletes the perfect training environment, similar to the Comrades Marathon terrain in Pietermaritzburg. It is a chance for runners to prepare effectively in conditions similar to the race they will be competing in,” he said.
The Honde Valley’s undulating landscape, known for its breath-taking views and challenging gradient, provides an ideal setting for long-distance preparation.
Athletes targeting the Comrades Marathon will find the event valuable in preparing the competition.
“Anyone can come, whether they want to run, walk, or just enjoy a day out in nature. We are encouraging participants to come and register. It is not just seasoned marathoners who are in for a treat.
“For those looking to enjoy the outdoors without the demands of ultra-running, the event also features a 10km fun run. Its open to all ages and fitness levels, this category encourages participation from the community, promoting fitness, networking, and a shared love for the sport,” said the former CAPS United player.
The event will culminate in a lively evening celebration, providing participants with a chance to unwind and socialise after a day of physical exertion.
Coinciding with the Independence Day holiday, the ultra-marathon offers a unique blend of sporting challenge and festive relaxation.
“It is more than just a marathon, it is a celebration of fitness, endurance, and our nation’s independence at the same time,” said Bunjira.
