A HARARE hotel lost over US$70 000 in a scam in which two employees allegedly duplicated deposit slips to swindle their employer.

Simbarashe Chamutsa, who was employed as an accountant, and Obert Muchabo, a debtors clerk, were not asked to plead when they appeared before Harare regional magistrate Ngoni Nduna.

The complainant is Cresta Hotels, represented by its finance director Tafadzwa Tafadzwa.

The court heard that between January and May this year, the two allegedly reproduced deposit slips reflecting lesser amounts than those on the original bank slips on 42 occasions.

They would then use the fraudulent slips for banking purposes and convert the difference, from the original slips, to their own use.

The court heard that the offence came to light after an internal audit, which established that Cresta Hotels had been prejudiced of US$78 599, through the two’s actions.

Cecelia Mashingaidze appeared for the State.
